documentary - d.o.p.Quarter Life Crisis
Quarter Life Crisis explores the reality of being in your 20s, a time often portrayed as exciting and full of opportunity, but which can also feel overwhelming, confusing and uncertain. The documentary follows three individuals at different life stages, one working in corporate Australia, one creating a life in Australia after moving from Mexico and one finding their way in the film and television industry after graduating.
This run-n-gun style of documentary lent itself to using a lightweight set-up such as the Sony FX3 and by using Canon nFD lenses we were able to create the soft-intimate look which is reflective of the vulnerability of our subjects. This blended with archival and camcorder footage gives audiences that sense of nostalgia as they reflect on their lives leading to this point of uncertainty. In the interviews we used dual camera setups, with an A cam capturing the wides and a B cam capturing tighter shots. This allowed us greater creative freedom such as shooting on the shadow side to create a sense of gloom and uncertainty in Tom’s sections or shooting at a low-angle signifying hope in Eva’s.
creative statement.
